SC State Fair Maintains "2008 Top 50 Fairs" Status

The SC State Fair has again been named as one of the 2008 Top 50 Fairs in North America by MCW (Mac's Carnival Warehouse), the
Internet warehouse for fairs, carnivals and events. Ranked at 44th spot, the 2008 SC State Fair attendance was 425,854.

SC State Fair Named One of Top 10 Fairs in the South

The SC State Fair has been named one of the Top 10 Fairs in the South by Southern Living Magazine. The magazine published its 2008 Readers' Choice Award Winners in the January 2009 issue. The fair was ranked eighth in the "Best Festival or Fair in the South" category as selected by readers from Texas to Delaware.
Fairground Parking Improvement Project Underway
BP Barber is providing design services to the South Carolina State Fair for improvements to the Fair's 30-acre parking area. The improvements will result in approximately 4,000 parking spaces that will be available for events at the fairgrounds, as well as University of South Carolina football games.
The parking area features drive isles constructed asphaltic concrete pavement and parking spaces comprised of Bermuda grass. The parking area will be heavily landscaped with a 25-foot landscaped area surrounding the site and landscaped islands interspersed among the parking spaces. The landscaping features native trees and shrubs and local favorites such as Live Oaks, Red Maples, Black gums, Crepe Myrtles, Sabal Palmettos, Tulip Poplars, Abelias and Tea Olives that are designed to provide aesthetic interest thoughout the year, and spectacular foliage during the Fall. An irrigation system will be installed for maintenance of the trees and shrubs. The parking improvements also include new electric lights and poles. The storm drainage system for the parking area is a standard type system with underground detention to avoid the need for an above ground detention system.
Services proved by BP Barber included site design (grading and strom drainage), landscaping planning and design, permitting assistance, surveying and construction administration services. The project is scheduled for completion in June, 2009.

Kudos to the 2008 SC State Fair Ambassadors of the Day
Thursday, October 9
Davis Brown – Americraft-Cantey Building
(pictured L-R) Gary Goodman, Davis Brown, Nancy Smith
Davis goes the extra mile and does so with a smile! Prior to, during and after the fair, Davis is busy helping in all aspects of the Americraft Cantey Building set up. This year he went the extra mile in assisting the Department of Agriculture with their display area. Davis makes the fair’s theme “Just to See You Smile” come alive. Thank you Davis!
Friday, October 10
Melinda Starnes – North Gate
(pictured L-R) Matt LaSchuma, Melinda Starnes, Nancy Smith
Melinda is known as the “Information Station” for the North Gate. Her energy and enthusiasm are endless, much like the Energizer Bunny! Thank you Melinda for going the extra mile!

Saturday, October 11
Joe Crump – Gate 1
(pictured L-R) Gary Goodman, Jackie Price, Joe Crump, Nancy Smith
Joe’s attention to detail and his observant eyes resulted in a quick response and a positive outcome for some of our fair patrons. Joe went the extra mile in assisting those in his area. His pleasant attitude and smile are a welcome sight to those entering Gate 1. Thank you Joe for being a Fair Ambassador!!!

Monday, October 13

Kathy’s interpersonal skills are a “treasure” in this area. She maintains a positive attitude and smile regardless of the situation. Thank you Kathy for being an integral part of the Treasurer’s Office and for offering continual customer service with a smile.

Tuesday, October 14
Del Hammond – Receptionist
(pictured L-R) Gary Goodman, Del Hammond, Nancy Smith
Del Hammond is one of the first faces you see as you enter the Administrative Offices and, during fair time, many many folks enter these doors! Del manages to greet all with a smile and pleasant attitude, regardless of how many directions she is pulled! Thank you Del for being a smiling fair representative. Congratulations on being selected Tuesday’s Ambassador of the Day!

Wednesday, October 15
Howard Still – Guest Services
(pictured L-R) Howard Still, Nancy Smith
Howard is an “ambassador” for the other “ambassadors”! Howard has worked in Guest Services for years and is well acquainted with the difference that customer service makes. As one of our “chief fair photographers”, Howard recently took his lunch hour from work to come and take the “Ambassador of the Day” photo. Thank you Howard for going the extra mile and being a true “Fair Ambassador”!

Thursday, October 16
Martin Shumpert – Small Stock Department
(pictured L-R) Gary Goodman, Martin Shumpert, Nancy Smith
Martin has been tending the duck slide in the Small Stock Department for over 25 years! He is probably one of the most photographed employees of the fair. The duck slide is a tradition in itself and a “must see” attraction at the fair. Thank you Martin for your dedication and for bringing smiles to at least two generations of fairgoers.

Friday, October 17
Lisa Kelley – Moore Building
(pictured L-R) Miriam Cobb, Brenda Turner, Lisa Kelley
Lisa is a true Fair Ambassador. She does it all, from assisting in the cookie kitchen to helping with cooking demonstrations on stage to playing “nurse”, Lisa is a trooper. Her pleasant demeanor and welcome smile are a real treat to everyone she comes in contact with. Thank you Lisa for going the extra mile! Congratulations to our newest Ambassador of the Day!

Saturday, October 18

First impressions are lasting impressions and John Laschuma, at our entrance gates, constantly strives to make our patron’s first impressions positive ones. As you can imagine, John and his staff encounter numerous situations, all requiring speedy resolutions. Thank you John for making true customer service a reality. Your attention to detail and positive attitude go a long way in bringing smiles to our patrons. Congratulations!
Sunday, October 19
Cal Hodges – Guest Services
(pictured L-R) Cal Hodges, Nancy Smith
Cal is the epitome of an Ambassador with all our fair patrons and the Guest Services staff as well. Cal constantly gives his best. Along with supervising 11 “unruly employees”, he designed and refined our PA system, a big plus for our patrons. Recently Cal, in the pouring rain, assisted fair patrons to help make their experience at the TobyMac and Jeremy Camp concert a pleasant one. Thank you Cal for being a true fair “Ambassador”. Congratulations!
